美國民主、共和兩黨總統候選人26日進行的首場電視辯論會，吸引至少8400萬人收看，創下紀錄。由於媒體多認為希拉蕊勝出，她27日乘勝追擊，稱川普的種種想法「令人厭惡」，川普則放話，下次辯論將重提前總統柯林頓的外遇事件，給希拉蕊「更重的一拳」。
希拉蕊告訴媒體記者，川普在辯論時提出的指控和說法「明顯不正確。我想很多人會覺得他的看法充滿冒犯之意，讓人厭惡」。川普則宣稱，他沒有提到希拉蕊夫婿、前總統柯林頓出軌一事，但下次他可能不會這麼好心。他說，「（下次）我可能會針對某些議題給她更重的一拳。這次我真的手下留情，因為我不想傷害別人。」
川普還說，希拉蕊批評他歧視女性時，他忍住了，「我原本想提她老公的情婦，但後來覺得不應該，因為她女兒也在場。」希拉蕊則嗤之以鼻，表示「他要怎樣打選戰都可以。真正的重點在於要有人格特質、適任能力和資格，才能勝任全世界最重要、最艱難的工作」。
據尼爾森公司（Nielsen）統計，此次辯論會收視率打破1980年總統大選時卡特與雷根辯論會創下的8060萬人觀看紀錄。本次統計並未包含許多透過推特、臉書和其他社群媒體觀看線上轉播的民眾，以及在酒吧和餐廳觀看辯論的數百萬人。大選前還有2場辯論，下1場將於10月9日舉行，最後1場將於10月19日登場。
